Atherfield Green Farm Self-Catering Cottages on the Isle of Wight

Welcome to our blog, which we have started to give an insight into our holiday barn-conversions on the Isle of Wight. As chief blog writer, I feel that my very first entry ought to introduce you to the main characters I am going to be writing about.

I should really start with Jenny and Alistair, your hosts at our self-catering holiday cottages on the Isle of Wight. Jenny has lived in Atherfield all her life, born and bred, a fount of all local knowledge! Alistair’s family moved to the island during the second world war, posted here by the Ministry of Agriculture. Brought up in farming and also trained as a butcher, Alistair took over Atherfield Green Farm in 1966 when he and Jenny married. They moved into the farmhouse, which was previously occupied by the cowman, and here they raised their two children, Kate and Ross.

Kate has stayed locally and is a fabulous auntie to her two nieces and nephew. This leads me nicely into introducing myself and my family. I am Anna, Jenny and Alistair’s daughter-in-law, and have been married to Ross, an engineer, for eleven years. We have three children: Emily, 8; Ellie, 6; and William, 4. I have just branched out into taking the bookings for the holiday cottages, so it will be me on the end of the telephone if you ring to book a holiday!

So as you can see, we are keeping the holiday cottages in the family and during busy times, we all get involved in helping Jenny and Alistair on change-over days. Although they sold most of the land when they undertook the barn conversions, Jenny and Alistair retained approximately ten acres and this also still keeps them busy. This summer saw an abundance of soft fruits and gorgeous sweetcorn, and now the fields are full of enormous cabbages and tasty potatoes.

I shall be using this blog to give you an insight into what goes on, not only at the farm, but also within the local community, so that hopefully, when you come and visit, you will feel very at home!

Anna
